MACHEREY-NAGEL was founded in 1911 in Düren as a specialist manufacturer of filter papers. Since that time, we have evolved into an innovative international company for chemical and biomolecular analysis. MACHEREY-NAGEL stands for innovative and creative solutions which we have a penchant for developing in-house. In addition to the “traditional” departments, such as research, production, sales and media design, we also have departments such as mechanical engineering and device development as well as our own joinery.

Plasmid DNA
As a pioneer in nucleic acid purification technologies, MN has been developing plasmid purification products of the highest quality for about 30 years. Today we offer a comprehensive portfolio of plasmid purification kits enabling the highest purity, excellent yield and very fast processing.

Semi Quantitative Test Strips
Test papers and test strips for semi quantitative analysis are extremely simple to handle. They are based on the principle of “Dip&Read”. They are available for a variety of parameters and comply with all requirements of a modern rapid test. The evaluation of these tests is carried out by a comparison with a colour scale.
Qualitative Test Papers – Without Colour Chart
Qualitative test papers come without a colour scale. With little effort, the presence of ions and other substances can be detected. The test papers change their colour when the concentration is above the specified limit of detection.

High performance silica on ALUGRAM Xtra sheets provides outstanding wettability for precise colourisation results. Moreover, these TLC sheets are easy to cut with scissors.

Glass Plates
Glass plates are robust, heat proof and chemically resistant to all common mobile phases and visualisation reagents. They are the traditional option in TLC/HPTLC and are widely used in the pharmaceutical sector and other laboratory environments.

Aluminium sheets are easy to handle, lightweight and flexible. High performance silica on ALUGRAM Xtra sheets provides outstanding wettability for precise colourisation results, even with 100% aqueous detection reagents. Moreover, ALUGRAM Xtra sheets are easy to cut with scissors. No flaking of silica occurs!

TLC and HPTLC
Features of modern TLC/HPTLC
The success of thin layer chromatography as a highly efficient microanalytical separation method is based on a large number of advantageous properties:
- High sample throughput in a short time
- Suitable for screening tests
- Pilot procedure for HPLC and Flash chromatography
- After separation the analytical information can be stored for a longer period of time (the TLC ready-to-use layer acts as storage medium for data)
- Separated substances can be subjected to subsequent analytical procedures (e.g., IR, MS) at a later date
- Rapid and cost-efficient optimisation of the separation due to easy change of mobile and stationary phase
'TLC' and 'HPTLC' are both widely used terms in laboratory environments, but what is the difference? At MACHEREY-NAGEL, we define 'HPTLC' where at least one of the following criteria is being fulfilled:
- Layers with particle size 2 to 10μm
- Layers prefixed with 'Nano'
- Modified layers
Narrow fractionation of HPTLC silica particles allows:
- Sharper separations
- Shorter developing times
- Shorter migration distances
- Smaller samples needed
- Increased detection sensitivity (compared to TLC)
